Abstract:The brick carvings engraved with the names of “Yang Zongxi” and “Ding Dusai” are two of the brick carvings of Song Zaju collected in Zhengzhou Huaxia Culture and Art Museum, which confirms and supplements the records about the costume and role identity of Song Zaju artists in the literature, and have important reference value for the costume research and role identity verification of Song Zaju artists. According to Kang Baocheng, an expert in the study of the history of traditional Chinese opera, “the role played by Yang Zongxi is to lead the play, and the role played by Ding Dusai is to play the last part.” There are some doubts about Mr. Kang’s interpretation on the two roles. Based on the comparative analysis of the costumes and props of the two roles in the brick carving and other images and documents of Song Zaju unearthed, the double evidence method is used to infer that the roles played by “Yang Zongxi” and “Ding Dusai” can be respectively called the end play and the leading drama.
