Abstract:In an era where the future is uncertain, participatory speculative design invites non-designers and designers to jointly speculate on pluralistic futures and discuss how participatory speculative design can be used to explore the pluriverse design, so as to achieve a preferable future. From the speculative design, its limitations and subsequent participatory turn are clarified. Secondly, the specific process of participatory speculative design from probing to generating and the types of participation are described. Finally, the methods of literature analysis and case study are used to clarify three current practice paths of participatory speculative design from existing cases. Existing participatory speculative design research is mostly experimental design practice, lacking specific methodology and theoretical framework. Contemporary design anthropology, which also focuses on future possibilities, criticality, and participation, may provide theoretical guidance. As one of the important actions to democratize imagination in the future, participatory speculative design looks forward to the joint participation of all people.
